Watches And Wonders 2022: Rolex

At Watches and Wonders 2022, Rolex introduces their latest creations shining the light of optimism and innovation on the watchmaking world. In its perpetual quest for excellence, Rolex constantly enhances both the aesthetics and technologies of its emblematic timepieces, as evidenced this year. They are an invitation to push boundaries, to reach ever higher.

As always, at the heart of the collection, is the same promise of outstanding quality and in-house mastery of watchmaking expertise.

Rolex Air-King

A tribute to explorers of the skies, the Rolex Air-King celebrates the pioneers of aviation and invites the wearer to take command of their own destiny. The new watch features a completely redesigned case with a crown guard and straight sides like the majority of Rolex Professional models.

The Rolex Air-King’s display has also been refreshed and is perfectly balanced thanks to the addition of a “0” before the “5” on the minutes scale. Each five-minute interval is, therefore, now marked by two digits. As well as this, the Air-King benefits from an optimised Chromalight display which guarantees maximum legibility in dark conditions. Its hands and triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock are filled or coated with a new luminescent material that provides a longer-lasting intense glow. The 3, 6 and 9 numerals, previously crafted from 18ct white gold, are now also visible in the dark with this innovative material exclusive to Rolex.

The new-generation Rolex Air-King is equipped with calibre 3230, a movement at the forefront of watchmaking technology, enabling it to display the hours, minutes and seconds. The calibre 3230 movement, first released in 2020, has a power reserve of 70 hours.

Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Air-King carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, ensuring excellent performance on the wrist.

Rolex GMT-Master II

The Rolex GMT-Master was made for airborne adventure. Now the watch of choice for travellers, it connects people beyond time zones. Rolex is unveiling a novel, unexpected version of the iconic GMT-Master II. On this new watch, the crown and its guard are on the left side of the watch case. The date aperture and the Cyclops lens have also moved, appearing at 9 o’clock.

This development required several technical adjustments of the movement and the Superlative Chronometer certification, for which the protocol, as well as some of the final tests, had to be adapted.

Made from Oystersteel and fitted with an Oyster bracelet, this new reference features a two-colour monobloc Cerachrom bezel insert in green and black ceramic, a striking colour combination never before seen on this model.

The new version of the Rolex GMT-Master II is equipped with calibre 3285, a movement enabling it to display the hours, minutes, seconds and date, as well as an additional time zone in 24-hour format.

Rolex Day-Date 40

The Rolex Day-Date has always epitomised prestige and innovation. Exclusively made from precious metals, it was the first calendar wristwatch to indicate, in addition to the date, the day of the week spelt out in full in a window on the dial. At Watches and Wonders 2022, Rolex introduces the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40 in 950 platinum, easily recognisable with its ice blue dial and a fluted bezel for the first time.

A material with exceptional luminosity and a captivating white glow, platinum is a challenging material to work with, especially when carrying out finishing. Rolex has introduced an innovative new manufacturing process for creating a fluted bezel in 950 platinum. Producing fluting with the perfect shape and sparkling surfaces was a technical feat that the brand was able to realise to outstanding expertise and skill. The new version of the Rolex Day-Date 40 is equipped with calibre 3255 enabling it to display the hours, minutes, seconds, day and date.

Rolex Datejust 31

The dials that decorate the new Datejust 31, introduced at Watches and Wonders, are bursting with fresh energy and are full of promise. Rolex presents three new versions of the Datejust 31 with striking floral motif dials. The design of the dials call to mind wild summer meadows and comprise of 24 flowers that stand out distinctly from one another with their finishes – sunray, matt or grained. Each of the flowers is lit from within by a diamond set into its centre.

The flower motif dial is azzurro blue on the first new timepiece, a white Rolesor version (combining Oystersteel and white gold) fitted with a fluted bezel. On the second reference, crafted from 18ct yellow gold, time is displayed across an olive-green dial, and on the third – an Everose Rolesor version (combining Oystersteel and Everose gold) –  the dial is silver. The new versions of the Rolex Datejust 31 are equipped with calibre 2236, a movement at the forefront of watchmaking technology, enabling it to display the hours, minutes, seconds and date.
