ROLEX: The Cellini Moonphase

By: Keith Parrett

ROLEX: The Cellini Moonphase

Inspired by Benvenuto Cellini, the Rolex Cellini Moonphase is as much a piece of artwork as it is a timepiece.

Born on 3rd of November 1500 in Florence, Cellini was an Italian renaissance figure, a goldsmith and a sculpture. His bust and memorial can be seen to this day on the Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in Florence which crosses the Arno river. Cellini has many works but is surely best known for his work Saliera, known as the salt cellar in Italian. Cellini wrote his Autobiography between 1558-1562, with Rolex publishing a biography of Cellini in 1980.

The Rolex Cellini collection was launched in 1968 to encompass non-Oyster watches and was relaunched by the watchmaker in 2014.

The current Rolex Cellini collection comprises of the Cellini Date, Cellini Time and of course the stunning Cellini Moonphase. The case is made entirely in precious metals, each timepiece marks the Rolex watchmaking tradition and evokes the finest examples of contemporary modern architecture

Used in the Rolex production since 2005, the case of the Rolex Cellini Moonphase is manufactured in Rolex’s 18ct Everose Gold, a metal which is noted for its beautiful hue. Rolex have their own foundry in Plan-les-Ouates. The lugs on the timepiece are shaped and refined with the double bezel, adding a touch of distinction. The white lacquer dial of the Cellini Moonphase bears a blue enamelled disc.

The Moon display is shown in Meteorite, a rare material found in Namibia with only 5% found being to the high Rolex specification. In keeping with their tradition and heritage of watchmaking, Rolex uses only the finest materials.

The movement used in the Cellini Moonphase is a ‘work of art’. Fully manufactured by Rolex, it has a tolerance of -2,+2 seconds per day and boasts a power reserve of 48 hours. The calibre 3195 also houses the Rolex patented Parachrom hairspring and the Rolex Paraflex shock absorber making it 50% more resistant to shocks. The Cellini Moonphase is waterproof to a depth of 50 metres.

The leather strap, produced in tobacco leather, is fitted with an 18ct Rolex Everose Gold folding clasp, another first for this stunning timepiece.

Having looked at this stunning timepiece in more detail I think you will agree that it is a great addition to any collection, steeped in history and heritage- an example of watchmaking at its finest.
