The latest release from TAG Heuer is a reintroduction of the iconic 1960s Autavia- this time as a stand alone collection. Taking inspiration from the dependability and ruggedness of the original Autavia watches, this collection boasts carbon composite hairspring technology- allowing each timepiece to be distinguished as an Isograph. This fusion of heritage with the latest advances in horological technology is what TAG Heuer have become infamous for.
The Autavia was originally designed as a dashboard instrument and between 1933 and 1957, was used in racing cars and aircraft- the name itself is a blend of automobile and aviation. Following the retirement of the Autavia as a dashboard instrument, then CEO Jack Heuer decided the name would be appropriate for a new launch of a chronograph wristwatch, which was released in 1962. The timepiece was designed to embody the thrill of rally racing, whilst maintaining its use as a timing instrument. The original Autavia wristwatch was a highly successful collection- particularly with armed forces the world over- until the model was retired in 1985. The Autavia is now available in seven variations, with a range of strap and dial options, including two Bronze references.
All of the stainless steel references in the Autavia collection feature a 42mm case size with a bidirectional rotating bezel, either crafted from coordinating blue or black ceramic, or stainless steel, and come fitted with either a stainless steel bracelet, or a light or dark brown calfskin strap. The dial comes in blue, black or grey options, all of which are smoked- creating a dynamic looking watch face. The Bronze references again feature a 42mm case size, with a bezel crafted from black or brown ceramic. The black bezel version features a green smoked dial with a khaki calfskin strap, whereas the brown bezel version features a brown smoked dial with coordinating dark brown calfskin strap. The dials retain the legibility that the Autavia collection is known for, by featuring clear rhodium plated indices and hands filled with SuperLuminova.
The Autavia collection has been developed with a calibre 5 movement, complete with a new in-house Isograph hairspring. The movements themselves are 26mm in diameter, and boast a 38 hour power reserve.
