TUDOR Ranger: 70th Anniversary of the British North Greenland Expedition

By: Hugh Cooke

TUDOR Ranger: 70th Anniversary of the British North Greenland Expedition

70 years ago today, a group of 30 intrepid explorers set off from London to begin a remarkable journey. The British North Greenland Expedition would last for over two years and see the team face incredible challenges on their scientific mission. Supporting their expedition, the men were presented with a TUDOR Oyster Prince watch.

Today, TUDOR honours their involvement in this historic mission with the launch of the new TUDOR Ranger.

The TUDOR Ranger is a tool watch that celebrates the spirit of the daring adventure that started 70 years ago. It continues the tradition of the expedition watch that was born with the Oyster Prince watches used by the members of the British North Greenland Expedition.

This 39mm steel timepiece is equipped with TUDOR’s manufacture calibre MT5402, a movement designed to ensure robustness, longevity, reliability and precision. MT5402 boasts a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.

Respecting the aesthetic standards established in the course of its history, the new Ranger model displays some features that will be appreciated by vintage watch enthusiasts, such as the beige hour markers painted in luminescent material which contrast with the grained, matt black dial. The markers also match the colour of the TUDOR shield logo and the inscriptions.

Another feature characteristic of the Ranger is the arrow-shaped hour hand. Those paying close attention to this piece, will note the return of a detail of historic importance – the Ranger mention at the 6 o’clock position on the dial. This text, and the tip of the angular seconds hand in burgundy, brings a novel touch to the characteristic Ranger aesthetics.

With this new timepiece, clients have the opportunity to choose between three ways in which to wear the watch. The new TUDOR Ranger is presented on a steel bracelet, a hybrid rubber and leather strap, and a green, red and beige fabric strap.

The fabric strap is one of the hallmarks of TUDOR, who became one of the first watchmaking brands to offer it with its products back in 2010. Woven using a traditional method on 19th-century Jacquard looms by the Julien Faure company in the St-Étienne region of France, its manufacturing quality and comfort on the wrist are unique. In 2020, TUDOR celebrated ten years of collaboration with the hundred-and-fifty-year-old Julien Faure company.

On the satin-brushed steel bracelet piece, the wearer will notice the TUDOR “T-fit” clasp equipped with a system for rapid length adjustment. This is an easy-to-use feature, requiring no tools and offering five positions. A practical system, it allows wearers of the TUDOR Ranger to carry out a fine, instant adjustment of the total length of the bracelet along an adjustment window of 8 mm.
