At the beginning of the month Omega watches announced a new edition to their collection, the release of the limited edition Seamaster AquaTerra. The watch will be released in conjunction with ‘Spectre’ the 24th James Bond film, with a number of the watches nuances being heavily 007 themed. The watch will grace the wrist of Daniel Craig in what is likely to be his final portrayal of Bond.
And that wasn’t the only nod of approval Omega had from Hollywood this month. After much debate over which Omega Christian Grey would be wearing in the recently released ’50 Shades of Grey’ film, it was revealed to be an Seamaster Aqua Terra with Silver dial and Brown Leather strap. Most people had their money safely on the Omega ‘Grey Side of The Moon’ but perhaps that was just a tad too much grey for Mr Grey.
Think that Omega are relying on your buying habits to be swayed by their acceptance in Tinseltown? Highly doubtful. Omega have their world class design and watch making abilities for that.
For some the knowledge that you have the same timepiece as 007, or ultimate playboy Christian Grey, may be a contributing factor when investing in your newest piece. 1.The Omega Seamaster Aquaterra Bond watch
This limited edition piece has been designed to Omega’s impeccable standards with the most subtle and interesting nods to Bond.
The Aquaterra 41.5 mm, water resistant to 150m has been created as a limited edition to 15,007 pieces world wide. The dial has been created in Blue, which is Daniel Craig's favourite colour, with the Bond Family coat of arms interlocking on the dial. The second hand in yellow also has the coat of arms strategically placed on it.
With these striking features present on the face of the watch, Omega watches have reiterated this on the reverse side. When you peer through the exhibition case back and wonder at the theatre the new Omega Master Co-Axial calibre 8507 shows. There is an astounding resistance to magnetic fields greater than 15,007 gauss. The rotor has been cut and shaped to resemble a gun barrel, very 007.
The model also comes with an impressive 4 year warranty, and David M. Robinson is proud to offer a complimentary 5th Year. The watches are likely to arrive in store later this year. 2.Omega Aqua Terra Chronograph with Brown Alligator Strap
Omega designed this watch with their rich mairtime heritage in mind.
The dial reflects the wooden decks of luxury sailboats, with the silver dial possesing a teak concept pattern. The stainless steel bezel sits comfortably at 41.5MM on a stunning chocolate brown leather strap. This certified chronometer is powered by the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8500 which can be seen through the transparent caseback.
It is the ultimate in understated style and luxury. A true gentlemans watch….although if that were true, we’re not sure how it ended up on Christian Grey’s wrist.
3.Omega Grey Side of the Moon
Ok, so this wasn’t actually worn by Christian Grey, but it’s such a stunning timepiece we just wanted another reason to talk about it.
The Story
On Christmas Eve in 1968, the Apollo 8 astronauts where closer to the moon than any living person had ever been before. When orbiting around the moon, commander Jim Lovell, noted that “the Moon is essentially Grey.”
These words resonated with Omega and inspired the name of their latest Horological Creation “The Grey Side of the Moon”.
The Materials
The case begins it’s existence as white ceramic. This is forged in a plasma reactor which is heated to 20,000 degrees Celsius for at least3 hours. During this process it is constantly bombarded by Hydrogen, Methane and Argon this chemical transformation transforms it to Zirconium Carbide and turns it from White to Grey. You can cut right down the middle and the whole material will be a shade of grey. Pretty awesome stuff.
The dial is made of Platinum and is sandblasted, therefore giving the look of the lunar surface and harking back to the inspiring words Jim Lovell recited nearly half a century ago. At 44.25mm this is not a slight watch. Those who don’t like to wear a watch so large on the wrist might find this over powering, however if you like to lead with your watch and can pull of the larger appearance this a watch that means business. The stunning grey alligator leather strap (detecting a theme?) is something very special indeed. For somebody looking for a timepiece that will make them stand out rather than fit in this piece really does the trick.
All eyes were on Omega at Baselworld when they released the timepiece back in 2014, at this stage is was called ‘Lunar Dust’. With not many more than half a dozen pieces in the UK you may feel a trip to the moon may be simpler than getting your hands on one of these beauties.
