As Watches and Wonders 2023 gets underway, TUDOR Watches introduces us to a selection of new releases across their iconic collections, cementing their ‘Born to Dare’ reputation.
Today, team DMR introduces you to the latest additions to the family.
A family that brings together sixty years of TUDOR diving history, the TUDOR Black Bay is powered by a mechanical movement manufactured in-house by the brand. The Black Bay with burgundy bezel remains one of TUDOR’s most recognised and recognisable models.
In its latest iteration, named Black Bay, the case keeps the original proportions of a 41mm diameter case with a thinner profile. Waterproof to 200m, the new TUDOR Black Bay is powered by the Manufacture Calibre MT5602-U, a self-winding mechanical movement with bidirectional rotor system, boasting a 70-hour power reserve and certified by METAS.
The Black Bay comes fitted with either an entirely satin brushed three-link steel bracelet or a five-oval-shaped-link brushed and polished steel bracelet, both complete with the TUDOR “T-fit” clasp equipped with a system for rapid length adjustment.
A black rubber strap option is also available for the Black Bay, with the brand’s signature snowflake motif on the inside for added grip, and it is form-fitted specifically for the Black Bay.
While the Black Bay line references a range of TUDOR’s early dive watches, the all-new Black Bay 54 is the most true-to-form example of TUDOR’s first dive watch, the reference 7922. The 37mm case retains the classic proportions of yesteryear, whilst boasting the technical prowess of TUDOR’s time-only Manufacture Calibre MT5400 and a 200m depth rating.
True to form, the unidirectional bezel is devoid of any graduated hash marks, echoing the days of the early ’50s when SCUBA diving was in its infancy and TUDOR was bold enough to manufacture a watch for those daring enough to engage with this new sport.
The new aesthetic details of the TUDOR Black Bay 54 don’t stop at the case dimensions and bezel, however. The seconds hand recalls the look of the original with a lollipop design. Ergonomics have evolved as well, with a redesigned crown and bezel, both featuring historical proportions.
Worn on a choice of a stainless steel three-link “rivet-style” bracelet or rubber strap, both with TUDOR “T-fit” rapid adjustment clasp, the TUDOR Black Bay 54 is powered by the COSC-certified Manufacture Calibre MT5400, which boasts a 70-hour power reserve.
Since it was first released, the TUDOR Black Bay GMT has remained a popular choice for world travellers. At Watches and Wonders 2023, TUDOR introduces a new version, telling time across an opaline dial, perfectly complimenting the reference’s iconic colour scheme.
Opaline isn’t quite white, instead there’s a slight silvery hint to the dial. Through a galvanic process, a matte white-grey finish is applied to the dial, and the marker surrounds are darkened to create a noticeable contrast. Beyond being reminiscent of the mid-century boom in commercial aviation, the charming opaline dial is highly legible. The TUDOR Black Bay GMT is equipped with the COSC-certified Manufacture Calibre MT5652, which boasts a 70-hour power reserve.
The TUDOR Black Bay 31/36/39/41 models bring a unique aesthetic to the Black Bay family. The curved cases feature a combination of finishes that elevate the watch in a contemporary fashion, offering a design language that slightly departs from the brand’s iconic tool watch spirit to embrace a sophisticated, versatile, unisex chic look and feel.
New for this year is an array of sunray dials that continue to push the watch in a stylish direction. Blue, anthracite or light champagne-coloured dials with or without diamond setting are introduced, with the minute track rendered in a contrasting colour evoking a certain warmth to the design. The new TUDOR Black Bay 31/36/39/41 are all powered by COSC-certified Manufacture Calibres, boasting power reserves from 50 hours for smaller movements to 70 hours for larger movements.
TUDOR has today expanded the dial range of the much-loved Royal family, to include radial-brushed salmon and chocolate brown dials offering an unexpected and exquisite aesthetic. The Royal range offers self-winding, sporty and chic watches with integrated bracelets that are as affordable as they are aesthetically sophisticated.
Boasting first-class technical performance and a refined aesthetic, this line sits at the crossroads between classic and sports watches. The Royal was a name first used by TUDOR in the 1950s to emphasise the superior quality of its watches, which stands until today. It comes in stainless steel or gold and steel and is offered in four sizes with a total of thirteen possible dials for every personality.
